The puzzle behind Frogspell: Letter grid word puzzle
Letter grid word puzzles give you a square of letters and ask you to find words in it. In the oldest forms you trace words through letters that touch, on paper or with letter cubes, and the more words you find, the better. Later variants turn the grid into a puzzle with a single goal, such as using every letter or finishing in a set number of words.
Also known as word grid puzzle, letter hop puzzle.
Frogspell is an original game from Daily New Game. Hopper can do more than step to a neighbour: diagonal hops and jumps of up to three squares are allowed, but they cost flies, and he only has a few. Pads sink once they are spelled, open water breaks up the pond, and the goal is to sink every pad in as few words as possible. Every pond ships with a checked solution that fits the flies.
How to play Frogspell
Hopper the frog hops across lily pads to spell words, and every pad he spells sinks.
- Hop from pad to pad to spell a word of three letters or more.
- A hop to a pad beside the last one is free.
- A diagonal hop, or a jump over one square, costs one fly. A hop of three squares costs two.
- Every pad in a word sinks, so plan your hops. Words of seven letters or more win a fly back.
- Sink every pad in the target number of words for three stars, or in more words for two. Four words, or two pads left, and you pass with one.
- A hint or two caps the pond at two stars, and lots of hints at one.
What you can never do
- Hop onto open water or a pad that has sunk.
- Use one pad twice in the same word.
Controls with Hopper the frog
- Drag across pads, or tap them one by one and tap the last pad again to play the word. Hop plays it too, and Clear starts it again.
- With a keyboard, the arrow keys move, Space adds a pad, Enter plays the word, Backspace takes a letter off and Escape clears it.
- Undo takes back your last word. Finish ends the pond when no pad can sink any more.
Strategies for beginners
Work out the word length you need
Count the pads and divide by the target. Twenty pads with a target of four words means words of about five letters. If you start with short words, you will need a long one later, so keep an eye out for it from the start.
Use free hops first
A hop to a pad that shares a side with the last one costs nothing. Build as much of each word as you can from free hops, and save your flies for the one pad that really needs a diagonal or a jump.
Rescue lonely pads early
Pads in corners, beside open water or across a gap often need a paid hop to reach. Spell them into a word while you still have flies. If you leave them until the end, you may find the flies are gone.
Jump over the water
A jump over one square costs one fly, whatever that square holds: a pad, a sunk pad or open water. Hopper can never land on water, but a jump lets a word cross a gap that would otherwise split the pond in two.
Aim for seven letters
A word of seven letters or more wins a fly back as well as sinking lots of pads. Endings like ING, ERS and ED are a good way to stretch a five letter word into a seven letter one.
Keep the fly costs showing
The setting "Show fly costs on the pads" is on at the start. While you build a word, it puts the fly cost on each pad you can still afford from your last letter, so you see a pricey hop before you make it. Undo is free, so test ideas without worry.
Quick tips from the game
- A pad with a warning mark can no longer be part of any word with the flies you have. Undo to rescue it.
- Long words are worth it: they sink more pads and can win a fly back.
Words to know
- Pad
- A lily pad with a letter on it. Every pad has to be sunk to clear the pond.
- Sunk pad
- A pad that was part of a word. It is gone and can never be used again.
- Open water
- An empty square in the pond. Hopper can jump over it but never land on it.
- Fly
- Hopper's fuel for long hops. Each pond starts with a few, shown above the pond.
- Free hop
- A hop to a pad that shares a side with the last pad. It costs no flies.
- Paid hop
- A diagonal hop or a jump over one square costs one fly. A hop of three squares costs two.
- Target
- The number of words a checked solution needs. Sink every pad in that many words or fewer for three stars.
- Stranded pad
- A pad with a warning mark: no word can reach it any more with the flies you have left.
Questions about Frogspell
Is Frogspell free to play?
Yes, Frogspell is free in your browser. The daily pond is free every day, and so are 10 levels a day. The Fresh pond mode, a new random pond whenever you like, is free too and does not use up your 10 levels. Free play explains the daily allowance.
How many flies does Hopper get?
Every pond starts with its own number of flies, shown above the pond. Small ponds usually give a few spare, and the biggest ponds give only the flies the checked solution needs. A word of seven letters or more wins one fly back, so long words can buy you extra hops.
Can Hopper hop diagonally?
Yes, Hopper can hop diagonally, but each diagonal hop costs one fly. A jump over one square costs one fly too, and a hop of three squares, counting across plus down, costs two. A hop to a pad that shares a side is always free, and nothing further than three squares is allowed.
Which words does Frogspell accept?
Frogspell accepts any English word of three to twelve letters in the game's word list of about 105,000 words. British and American spellings both count, and so do plurals and other word forms like HOPS and HOPPED. Names, abbreviations and two letter words do not, and rude words are not in the list at all.
Can I play more than one Frogspell pond a day?
Yes, you can play the daily pond, 10 levels a day and as many Fresh ponds as you like. The levels run from small 5 by 5 puddles to 8 by 8 lakes in five difficulties. Plus lifts the 10 level limit and opens every difficulty from the start.
What happens if I run out of words?
If no word fits the pads and flies you have left, undo a word or two to try another route. You can also finish the pond: you still pass with one star if at most two pads are left, or if you have played at least four words (or the target, if that is lower). Otherwise the pond is not passed.
Do hints cost stars in Frogspell?
Yes, using hints lowers the most stars you can earn. One or two hints cap the pond at two stars, and lots of hints at one. Hints follow a checked solution, and when the target is out of reach they tell you how many words to undo instead, which never counts as a hint.
Is Frogspell OK for kids?
Yes, Frogspell is designed to be family friendly. Rude words are not in the word list, and every word the game uses in its solutions and hints passes a family friendly check. Children can play without an account. See privacy and families for how we handle data.
What is a good first word in Frogspell?
A good first word uses mostly free hops and clears pads that will be hard to reach later, such as a corner or the edge of a gap. Avoid spending your flies on the first word unless it rescues a lonely pad. Then check that the pads left behind still join up.
How can I find longer words?
Start with a short word you can see, then look for letters that extend it. Endings like S, ED, ER and ING, and starts like RE and UN, turn a short word into a long one. Saying the word out loud and trying each neighbouring letter in turn also helps.
